Tide House2026

A house held between land and sea.

The first thing we drew was the space we would leave open. On an exposed strip of Portugal’s Atlantic coast, Tide House gathers everyday life around a single protected courtyard.

01 / THE IDEA

A small world. An open horizon.

The brief was simple: somewhere a family could come together without always being in the same room. A low, folded plan places shared spaces on one side of the courtyard and bedrooms on the other. Between them, covered outdoor rooms offer shelter from the prevailing wind.

A continuous concrete roof holds the composition together. Its deep edge keeps the high summer sun outside, while lower winter light reaches into the house. Bronze-framed sliding doors disappear into pockets, letting the main room become part of the garden.

The house sits behind the existing dune line. Gravel, drought-tolerant grasses and a single olive tree make a landscape that can change with the seasons. The sea is always present, but never the only thing to look at.

Pale concrete and oak in Tide House, with a deep window seat opening towards the coastal courtyard
Oak, linen and the changing light. A quieter scale within the concrete shell.
02 / A CLOSER LOOK

The edge is a place to stay.

A deep oak window seat turns the threshold into a room of its own. Inside, pale stone floors continue the tone of the courtyard. Timber shutters and soft linen let the family adjust the light without losing the feeling of an open house.

03 / THE MATERIAL LANGUAGE

Honest by nature.

01

Board-formed concrete

A record of the timber that shaped it.

02

Portuguese limestone

One continuous surface, inside and out.

03

Oiled oak

Warmth wherever the hand meets the building.

A NOTE FROM THE STUDIO

“Begin with the weather. Leave space for the unexpected.”
