Nika Sol
Material experiments & provisional structures
PART OF THE 2026–27 SEASON
A photograph of a thing, and of the forces holding it.
Nika Sol is a fictional artist working between constructed objects and their photographic afterlives. Her materials are chosen for the way they admit, scatter or obstruct light, as much as for their shape.
Sol’s imagined studio is an ongoing collection of folds, props and failed balances. Objects remain adjustable until the moment of the photograph. The resulting images retain small irregularities—bubbles, scratches and uneven edges—that describe the effort of making.
At INDEX, Soft systems places photographs beside touchable material samples and simple structural drawings. The exhibition makes a case for fragility as something to understand carefully, rather than a condition to overcome.
Ways of
working.
- A join is a relationship.
- Let daylight rearrange the work.
- Keep the useful failures.
Soft systems
Nika Sol folds, balances and photographs materials on the edge of giving way. A study of support, transparency and the useful beauty of an imperfect structure.

Sol’s material table session explores how a flat sheet can hold space. The activity uses soft card and translucent paper, with seated workstations and instructions available in print. No tools or previous experience are needed.
